The four shunting locomotives Gmf 4/4 242 and 243, in service with the Rhaetian Railway in Switzerland since 1991, are practically the most reliable “beasts of burden” in Switzerland: the locomotives are designed to transport loads at low speeds over long distances. They are even used to tow damaged trains.
The 1-metre gauge locomotives of type axle formula B’B’ have a diesel-hydraulic drive, a speed of 60 km/h, a weight of 50 t and an output of 350 kW at 20 km/h. They are powered by Caterpillar diesel engines.
