The X3800 – also affectionately called “Picasso” by railway enthusiasts – is the famous diesel railcar of the French railway company SNCF. The model with mechanical transmission was built in the early 1950s with over 500 pieces under the management of Renault and remained in service until the 1980s.
With an output of 335 hp (250 kW), these machines replaced steam traction. They proved to be extremely robust and reliable in operation on the non-electrified French mainland network.
The origin of its nickname “Picasso” is unclear. It may be due to the obvious asymmetry of the cab: This is off-centre on top of the roof and recalls the painterly style with which the great Spanish artist used to draw faces.
